The last Gathering I managed to get to was the Nat'l in '99 up outside of Ridgeway, PA in the Allegheny Nat'l Forest. I almost ashamed to say I didn't make it to WV in '06. Especially since I've done a bunch of backpacking in that very same area of the Monongahela Nat'l Forest---it's quite beautiful.
Brother, even if you could only come for a day or two, it'd be nice to actually meet someone posting here.

heard too many horror stories about those "gatherings" - not exactly what i would consider a "kind" scene - thieves, scumbags, and virtual pedophiles. would rather hang out with hardened criminals who are atleast honest with themselves and others

no offense though -

This horribly sung old song tells the story of a young kid named Erny who's life was changed forever at a rainbow festival...

Lyrics available here:

I wouldn't push this song but it was topical...

actually, it was I who forgot MY manners. Methinks I came across too harsh for even myself. I guess all my character flaws dont just disappear when I get sober - lol.

Your points are well taken my friend. And you are certainly right that there is a certain magic that happens - hello self!!! AA!!! To be honest, I was just in a cranky mood early last night - i was aggravated, frustrated, and coming out of my skin for no conscious reason - I had no urge for a drink - my mind was just a bit fucked. So... I went to an AA meeting again.

My apologies for jumping all over the Gathering. Wasnt right of me to do so.

And thanks for asking how i'm doing. I am doing so much better this time. 52 days today :) very few cravings and slowly enjoying life more and more. i have my moments, but i am in a much better place than 2 months ago.

I hope you are doing well man - just "bitch-slap" me next time i get cranky - lol (kinda serious about that - i need reminders sometimes)

No trouble man. I didn't take it harsh at all because there's a certain amount of truth to it. My first thought was "hey, we know some of the same people." I think even the TITO's of the world can find that what I said was at least partly true as well.

Funny story... I guess it was the fall '95 & my bro & my 5yr old son & a friend went to a regional gathering in the FingerLakes region of NY. We were camped near a copse of trees in what was an old pasture on a farm that had either been annexed or bought outright f/inclusion in the Nat'l Forest. Anyway, during the afternoon one day a Forest Service Jeep came touring around where we were camped, I guess to make sure nothing untoward or illegal was happening---"no officer that's burning incense you smell!" As the four officers in the truck started driving away, they drove over the edge of a small drainage culvert that had too steep of a drop off and got the under-carriage stuck on it. It took a minute for us to realize they were stuck just thinking they had stopped for some other reason. They WOULD NOT accept a push from the now 20-30 "dirty hippies" standing around watching their folly. Not one of the officers got out of the truck for the hour or so they were stuck there, I can only assume some all consuming fear of us as the reason. Finally another Jeep showed up & used his winch to get their vehicle free. The REAL funny part was me driving my bus across the same field, entering the culvert from farther up, and driving down it, stopping for a moment right in front of them & giving them a wave, smile, & a peace sign while driving away.

I'm not tryin to sell you on it, but is any of that any different than what used to go on at shows? Is it any different than what goes on all around you---in your own town or city? Gatherings draw ALL types, from lawyers to business owners to convenience store cashiers to handicapped crack addicted black gay pedophile terrorists. As idealistic, possibly naive, and "hippie-dippie" as Gatherings seem sometimes, there IS a certain magic that happens when people of all types get together to and work towards something bigger than us all. Despite how many different points of view are represented, from Krishna's to the Mother-worshippers to the people just looking to get high (naturally or w/chem aid) with other like-minded individuals, there's something for just about everyone to get behind.
